  1. Volunteer work occupies your own personal time. It is important to commit to projects that you care about.
  2. There are many forms of volunteer work, such as hospital DJing, helping the elderly or assisting people with a disability. Check your local press and community centre for details.
  3. Helping others can make a genuine difference to their lives, plus it lets you meet new friends and builds your self-respect.
  4. Everyone has something to offer. If you aren't a people person, perhaps you can offer your organisational or budgeting skills.
  5. Overseas voluntary work can be your first time alone and independent in a foreign country. Make sure you've prepared for every eventuality.
