Languages And Culture: The Basicsby need2knowcouk September 5, 2014 0 comments
Thanks to the web’s global reach, there are thousands of web sites out there that can help you start learning a new language.
Learn the basics
If you would like to pick up some basic phrases, you could try visiting the BBC’s Education section which hosts a whole range of free online language courses for French, Spanish, German or Italian.
One popular translation web site is the Babel Fish translator on the AltaVista web site. This site lets you enter up to 150 words in English and translate them into languages such as French, German or even Japanese. It also lets you translate foreign phrases and sentences back into English.
Soak up the culture
For many people, experiencing new cultures is an important part of their trip abroad.
It can be great to just relax in the sunshine and enjoy your break away from work or school, but getting out and about and sampling local art and culture can be just as much fun.
For example, if you’re on an art course at college, then why not check out Paris’ museums and art galleries. If you’re into history, why not check out the ancient ruins in Greece? If you’re into fashion, why not check out the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, Italy, which has houses sketches, photographs and over 10,000 pairs of shoes made by Salvatore Ferragamo, who designed shoes for actresses including Marilyn Monroe.
When searching through travel site, try tapping your interests into the site’s ‘Search’ box.
There are thousands of sites detailing the history, customs, food, art and festivals of the world’s countries and it’s likely that at least one will have something that appeals to you.
