n2k spoke to aspiring footie coach Gary about a new programme that helped him improve his game and digital skills.
Looking for a job
Job hunting isn’t always easy. By the time Gary was 19 years old, he had already spent four months searching for a job in the sport and leisure industry.
“I started getting worried. It also didn’t help that there was so much on the news about high unemployment,” explains Gary.
Gary also found that his lack of work experience was a problem as many employers look for people that are both qualified and have experience.

BT Communicating for Success
Digital technology is really taking off at the moment. Many employers now use Twitter, Facebook and MySpace as a way to get to the wider audience.
The BT communicating for Success programme is a joint venture with Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity. The programme doesn’t just introduce people to the digital industry, but it also uses sport, particularly football, as a medium.
Going digital
On the course students produce digital content such as videos and photos for TV sports channels, and are also taught about digital devices and software too.
“Working on the computers was really fun. After we made DVDs, it felt great to see the results of the effort I had put into making the film,” remembers Gary.
Football scene
As he’s a football fan, Gary completed his course at Portsmouth Football Club Study Support Centre. "I have always wanted to work in sport and being on the course just rekindled my love for football, sport and becoming a coach."
Whilst there he was given the opportunity to take part in coaching sessions too. "I was fairly nervous," Gary admits, "but at the same time excited to be able to teach what I love."
Support
The programme doesn’t just provide training either. Staff are always around to give you support throughout the course as well. “My centre manager helped a lot with giving me confidence. She was always encouraging me and was so interested in everyone's opinions.”
Top three tips
On the programme Gary learned some invaluable skills on how to be a good coach:-
- Always listen - something may be said that can help you improve.
- Be approachable - always make people around you feel like they can talk to you. Being a role model is key.
- Make sure everyone is having fun - that’s what it's all about in the end!
