Want to be a photographer?

Friday 5 December 2008
Next week is the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards. n2k looks at some of the entries and finds out what it takes to make it as a photographer.
What does a photographer do?
Nowadays most photographers use digital cameras, but cameras that use film are still pretty common, especially when you start getting more into it.
People usually gain photography skills slowly over time. The professionals have a good knowledge of cameras, films and accessories and also of setting up lighting and equipment. Photographers also study composition – how to take the best shot. Most also have a good grasp of photo editing software like Photoshop so they can improve or alter their pictures.
Photography often means working as a freelancer and constantly looking for work so you will also need to be really motivated, energetic and love what you do!
What types of photographers are there?
There are a huge number of different types of photographers. These include:-
- Social - such as wedding and portraits photographers that you see on the high street
- Advertising and editorial - for advertisements, magazines and photo libraries
- Press and photojournalism – for newspapers and other news publications
- Fashion –models and clothing for magazines and catalogues
- Corporate– for company promotional material
- Scientific or medical – recording scientific research or medical conditions
Qualifications
Experience counts for a lot, so the sooner you start practising the better. This will also give you a feel for whether you want to take it up as a profession or perhaps more of a hobby.
Colleges and universities offer loads of courses – full and part time. Some HNDs and degrees include the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), which is highly regarded by employers.
To become a press photographer, you will usually need a photojournalism qualification approved by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).
Getting started
Finding work experience with an assistant photographer is a good way of gaining experience, building your portfolio and learning on the job.
Apprenticeships which may be available in England are Young Apprenticeships, Pre-Apprenticeships, Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships. To find out which one is most appropriate check the apprenticeships website or contact your local Connexions adviser.
