Got the time to work?

Picture of a question mark

So you're sick of having no cash and you've nothing to do with your free time and reckon it'd be a good idea you went out and got a job.

Time on your hands?

Part-time is still time to be taken away from you. Before accepting a part-time job you need to be sure that you have the time to do it. Even if you do have lots of free time, are you ready to give most of it up to go to work?

Will you manage?

If you're the kind of person who finds it difficult to manage their time, getting a job could actually be a positive thing, for it will force you to organise your time more efficiently so you can fit in work with the rest of your free time.

If you think that a job is going to eat into all your leisure time and leave you feeling like you don't have any fun, you might be better off waiting until you're able to organise your time more.

Can you commit?

Even a job of just a few hours a week can feel like it's taking up a lot of time if you're not used to it. Do you reckon you'd have the energy and commitment to see it through?

You might have to make a few changes in other areas of your life. Maybe you'll have to let your social life slide a little so you're fully energised to do your job.

Great expectations

Employers expect a degree of commitment from you because they are paying you to be there. If you reckon early starts, long days or trudging to work whatever the weather aren't for you then maybe you should have a long hard think about whether it's something you can get over:

Working part-time can be rewarding but can take dedication.

Right for you?

Don't just pick any old job to do. If you don't like what you'll be doing, the chances are that you won't be properly into it and you might not go into work as often as you're supposed to.

Nobody is saying that you have to find the perfect career path through your part-time job or decide what you want to do for the rest of your life, but if there's not even a little bit of enjoyment there, you won't last very long.

Make sure any job you take is right for you
