Whether you like it or not, everyone has to go out and get a job at some point, but are you ready for the world of work?

We talk to five n2k readers about working. Have they ever had a job? Do they like it? Are they looking forward to the 9 to 5?

Miss Independent

Anna, 19, has been out earning a crust from an early age: "I couldn't wait to start earning money and have had a part time job since I was about 13," she tells us.

"I think if you start working earlier it gets you used to being independent and makes you realise the value of money!"

Time is precious

Vanessa, 14, takes a different view and reckons that work can wait until she's less school work to do.

"I don't think it's a good idea to work while you are studying for your exams or at school because it is distracting you too much!" she explains. "You shouldn't work until you have left school."

Make it on my own

n2k reader Nathan is avoiding employment by staying on and doing further study. The 16-year-old says: "Although I'm in college, I really don't want to work. I get £30 a week of EMA cash, as well as extra pocket money."

So why is Nathan so anti-employment at the moment? "My previous experience with working at a fast food restaurant has really affected my willingness to work. They didn't treat me as a human. I now want to go into self-employment."

Will I like it?

Andrew, 15, is concerned that working really won't be his kind of thing. "I have never worked and I am worried that when I do start work I won't like it," he says.

He reckons the best way forward is to carry on in education. "I am stopping on at school to get more qualifications and I just hope that there will be a good job for me out there when I leave."

Love to work

16-year-old Darwen reckons that people living off their parents are in for a bit of a shock.

"Those who don't work and rely on money from their mum and dad will not be ready for the real world," he explains. "I've never got pocket money since I was 13 because I got a paper round and learnt to stand up for myself"
