What to wear for a job interview

Friday 24 February 2006
First impressions last, as they say, and if you've managed to bag yourself an interview for a job or course, you're going to have to look the part.
n2k's fashion team are here to help you put your best foot forward in the style stakes.
Smarten up
If you've got an interview for a job, smart is the keyword. Make sure that the clothes you choose look neat and clean and are ironed: a rumpled pair of trousers or mega-creased shirt will give the interviewer the impression that you're not really bothered.
Guy with a tie
For guys, a shirt and tie is probably best for a job interview. Make sure that you wear shoes, not trainers, and that you give them a good polish.
Tuck shop
You should wear smart trousers and be sure to tuck your shirt into them. It's probably not that important that you wear a suit jacket, but if you have one, it can't hurt to whack it on.
Belt up
You should wear a belt with your trousers and make sure that your tie is tied properly. Your hair should be clean and brushed if possible. Go easy on the hair gel, too.
Top of the world
Girls should dress smartly too; a formal skirt or trousers should do the trick, along with a smart-casual top. Try not to go for a top that is revealing or shows a lot of flesh: it won't look as smart as something with sleeves would.
Footloose
Your shoes should be closed-toed and not too high. You don't want to almost fall over as soon as you get to the interview because you're teetering about on skyscraper heels.
Tights
Wear tights with a skirt if you like, but try not to go for anything too wildly designed. A plain pair to match the colour of your skirt or jacket should be OK.
Hair today
If you've got long hair, it's probably best to tie it back and if you like to wear make up, you probably shouldn't put too much on.
Accessories
Keep your jewellery simple and to a minimum, and if you take a bag with you, make sure it's in good condition and matches what you're wearing.
