Ever wondered what it would be like to work as an RAF Reserve? Here's all the information you need on how to get involved.

On TV

Have you noticed the new ads on TV? In August The Royal Air Force (RAF) advertised on TV for the first time ever in a bid to get more recruits, by sharing real stories of the people behind the planes.

Watch the ad.

What is an RAF Reserve?

The RAF works with other defence organisations to defend the UK! Its main roles are to:-

  • defend the UK and its interests
  • strengthen international peace and stability
  • be a force for good in the world

RAF Reserves work alongside regular RAF people in support roles.

Who can apply?

To be an RAF Reserve you must be aged 17 or over and be able to offer a minimum commitment of one weekend per month, plus extra time for basic training. You also need loads of energy, enthusiasm and must like working with other people as there will be a lot of team training and work.

This adds up to 27 days per year, although some Reservists undertake many more days’ annual training.  Reserves can expect to go on operation at least once in their first three years and this could be anywhere in the world.

Jobs available

The RAF has a range of jobs available for people 17 and over. Jobs include part-time (Reserves) and full-time such as Air Traffic Controllers, Aerospace Battle Managers and Regiment Officers!

What is the work like?

The RAF Reserves offers the opportunity to work alongside regular RAF personnel in all situations. The work will also involve gaining skills that compliment any other work you might do.

How much do they pay?

The RAF Reserves will pay you while you undergo training and you will also qualify for a tax-free annual training bounty in a lump sum.

When you join, your designated rank will determine how much you are paid, based on a daily rate. This also depends on the trade and branch you belong to and your level of experience.

How do I apply?

The RAF is actively recruiting for RAF Reserves, Aerospace Battle Managers, Air Traffic Controllers, Medics and Regiment Officers. Go to the RAF Reserves website for more information or call 0845 605 5555.
