n2k went along to the London International Music Show - watch the video!

The show

The London International Music Show aims to inspire future talent, by hosting a whole load of seminars, workshops and live performances from some of the most talented and established musicians in the industry.

Areas at the event included Drummer Live, Unplugged, Sound Recording Technology and the London Guitar Show. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, Chad Smith and guitarist Joe Satriani were just a couple of the artists that took part.

Music mania

It wasn't just celebrity musicians that showcased their talent though, the show included a Buskers showcase and even a Guitar Idol competition.

We spoke to some young people about their reasons for attending the Education Day at the LIMS. Amateur musician Simon :-“There’s a lot of help if you’re in the music industry and you want to learn about performing.”

Christie listened in on the Radio 1 talk given by DJ Colin Murray who gave advice about sending demos.“I've learnt that people shouldn’t be afraid to send in their demos… there’s still a lot of undiscovered talent out there.”

The Infadels

The Infadels are Bnann, Alex, Matt, Richie and Wag. Their debut album ‘We Are Not The Infadels’ was released in 2006, and was such a hit they ended up doing more than 300 performances across 3 continents in less than 3 years!

So what’s their advice for young people who want to get into the notoriously competitive music industry?

Bnann says, “Those who stay dedicated tend to win out in the end. It’s not an easy game, you’ve got to be a tough cookie, willing to make those sacrifices...”

Start your own band

There are many things to think about if you want to start your own band:-

  • Who will play which instruments?
  • Who will do the vocals?
  • Where will you rehearse?
  • Will your parents or neighbours be ok with constant music blasting out of your garage?
  • What will you name your band? It’s got to be cool, catchy and unique.

Complementing each other musically and mentally is one of the most crucial aspects when starting a band. However, the main thing every band member has to share is that you all love music - there’s no point starting a band if your only goal is to be famous.

Get out there

Once you’ve recorded a few songs, set up a MySpace page and get your music out there. You could also get some experience performing by taking part in unsigned bands competitions or even ask around your local youth clubs or pubs if they need any entertainment.

Getting into the music industry can be difficult, so it’s up to you to make your own mark.

Bnann agrees,“Just start doing it, don’t wait for anyone else. Get your own record signed, get your own tours set up and dedicate yourself to it.”
