This week n2k is looking at some of the ideas laid out in the new Children’s Plan, and providing links and helpful tips that could be useful for you. In this, part 4 or our 5 part series we check out how you can make the most out of education and work opportunities.

More choice

Recently the Government has been introducing different ways to give you more choice in education. As well as the standard GCSE’s, A Levels and Uni courses, there will soon be more choices such as diplomas, apprenticeships and work based training. So what will be the best option for you? Check in to DirectGov for some advice.

Money to learn

Are you keen to carry on your education but are just not sure where you are going to find the money from? Don’t worry – there are many schemes that can help. If you’re still at school find out more about EMAs. If you’re thinking of going to Uni there are also loads of financial incentives to help you. Check out the Unimoney section of the DirectGov website.

Work time

Whether you like it or not, everyone has to go out and get a job at some point, but are you ready for the world of work? Do you know what to expect? It’s natural to be worried about going into the workplace - read about how some other young people dealt with getting a job.

You can also get careers advice plus info about benefits, your rights at work and even careers advice on the DirectGov website.

Learn more, earn more

So it's the end of school - you might have been waiting for this moment your whole school life or you might be really worried about what you're going to do next. However next year things will be a bit different, as the Government plans to legislate to raise the participation age from 16 to 18. If this is made law, from 2013 all young people would be required to participate in some form of education or training up to the age of 17, and to 18 from 2015.

In this week’s n2k vote we also ask your opinion about the Government are raising the school leaving age to 18 by introducing more options. Have your vote! Before you do find out exactly what the changes will mean and how they could benefit you!

Your say

You can also have your chance to voice your opinions about the Children’s Plan in the n2k debate. Which part of the plan is most likely to help or affect you? Tell us what you think.
