Before you go on your gap year

Monday 6 June 2005
When you're looking forward to your gap year, it's tempting just to get yourself out there and worry about the dull stuff later.
By doing some light admin before you go, not only will you be prepared, you'll also have less to worry about as you have the time of your life
Sure thing
Without being pessimistic, you never know what's round the corner, so getting comprehensive travel and medical insurance is a good idea. Make sure you're covered for any activities you reckon you might be doing while you're away.
Local hero
Do some research into your destination before you go, including its laws, customs and language. It may be a small word but customs and laws vary greatly between countries and you don't want to get up anybody's nose or end up in trouble with the law! Check FCO Travel Advice before you go at www.fco.gov.uk/travel or call 0870 606 0290.
Mail trail
Setting up an email account before you go is essential. You'll be able to keep up both with people at home and also mates of yours on the move. Email yourself important info like emergency contact numbers or details of your insurance policy. It's also a good way of letting everyone track what you're doing, meaning that your relatives won't be freaking out wondering where you are. Emailing once a fortnight should be enough to ease their minds.
Doctor doctor
A visit to your GP before you go is a good idea. Tell him or her where you're going and they'll be able to tell you if you need jabs or give you medical advice particular to that country. You'll have to pay for your jabs, though, so make sure you budget for it.
Check, mate
Check your visas and passport before you go. It may sound obvious, but you don't want to be stranded at the airport, do you? Also, make sure you're taking enough cash with you. It may be that you're intending to work while you're away, but you're unlikely to get work straight away, so budget for emergencies.
Be flexible
If you book a flexible ticket, it gives you the chance to change your travel plans. You might meet up with someone who's going somewhere you hadn't planned on going, or decide that you've had enough of your first destination.
