DVLA online

The online service means that applying for your provisional licence is now only a few clicks away at www.direct.gov.uk/drivinglicence.

This means that you no longer have to collect forms from the Post Office before sending them off to the DVLA in Swansea..

What is a provisional licence?

A provisional driving licence is an essential legal document, allowing you to drive a car on public roads and will be switched for a full driving licence when you pass both your theory and practical driving test.

The earliest you can get your provisional licence is your 17th birthday. You canapply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, but you'll still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.

Why do I need a provisional licence?

If you are learning to drive for the first time, whatever your age, you need to be in possession of a provisional driving licence before getting behind the wheel.

Once I have the licence, can I just get in the car and drive?

A provisional driving licence carries certain restrictions that are removed when in possession of a full driving licence.

Provisional drivers must always make sure there are L-plates on any car they drive, and they must never drive on the motorway.

Provisional drivers must also always be accompanied by a passenger in the front passenger seat, who is over 21, able and fit to drive, and has held their full driving licence for over three years.

What will I need to apply?

There is an administration fee of £50 when applying for a provisional driving licence. Completing your application form online will mean you will receive your driving licence even quicker.

Before you start the online process make sure you have the following to hand:

  • a valid debit or credit card
  • your UK passport if you have one
  • details of previous addresses
  • a printer to print off the application form.

Will my card details be safe?

Yes. The Directgov website keeps strict security standards using the latest technologies and encryption software to safeguard any data collected.

Can I also get my car tax online?

In most cases, yes you can. All you'll need is your debit card, valid insurance and a few other details. You can find out more about what you'll need on Directgov.

Can I still apply for a licence by post?

You can still pick up a D1 form from the Post Office to apply via the post if you don't have access to the Internet.
