The weather might not be perfect for the beach, but that shouldn't stop you from heading to the sea and sand.

Beaches near you

Try to do some research before deciding on a beach to go to. If you need some help The Good Beach Guide lists shores that are known for good water and sand quality.

Southwest England

Devon and Cornwall are famous for sand, sea and surf! Croyde Bay always has big waves which makes it really popular with surfers. Read more about surfing here.

Holywell Bay in Cornwall is known for its low tide and its high waves. When water levels are low you’ll be able to see a 70 year old shipwreck rising from the water.

East Anglia

If you're into relaxed atmospheres, Holkham Beach in Norfolk sets the tone for a quiet and chilled out shore, perfect for sunbathing and reading a good book.

North England

Further north, West Kirby in Wirral has some of the clearest waters around, with amazing views of the North Wales Coast Line. Holylake Beach isn’t too far either and great for water sports.

Wales

If you can't afford to go long haul, then Barafundle Beach in Pembrokeshire is the closest thing you’ll get to the Caribbean in the UK! It was once voted Britain's most beautiful beach for the quality of water and sand, as well as location and the natural environment.

Top 3 Euro beaches

If the weather worries you why not head to Europe? Here's more information on what you need to know about going abroad.

Kallbadhuset, Sweden

The only three rules at Kallbadhuset, a.k.a Kallis, beach is sun, sea and party. During the summer, people from all over Sweden head there to make the most of the long daylight hours and live music on the beach.

Las Islas Cies, Galicia, Spain

The coastline of Galicia in Spain, which was once inhabited by pirates, is one of the world's tucked away secrets and is only open during the summer.

Cirali, Turkey

There are loads of paradise-like beaches in Turkey, but Cirali is one of the best. Apart from white sands, it’s got some cool tourist spots like the ruined city of Olympos, loads of canyons and coastal mountains. Plus, on some nights you can even see the Milky Way in space.

Beach bag

Packing for the beach is almost as fun as being there. Apart from your swimsuit, flip flops and mp3 player, there are a few other essentials:-

  • Sunscreen: The higher the SPF, the better. Try to buy one that’s water resistant so that it won't rinse off when you jump into the water.
  • Sunglasses: Look out for lenses with the UV400 label.
  • Bottled water: Drinking H20 does wonders for your body - it keeps you hydrated and at the right temperature.
  • Towel: You don't want to be covered in sand do you?

You'll probably leave your bag alone to go for a swim, so to be on the safe side only bring essentials and not the entire contents of your daily bag!

Seaside code

Everyone likes a little bit of sea and sand, but it's still important to be aware of your surroundings.

When you're at the beach make sure you look at sign posts and talk to life guards about the sea conditions and tides. They’ll let you know whether it’s safe to swim or not.

Never jump in to the water from a high point - it can be quite dangerous for you and others as well. Find out more.

If you see someone who needs help, don't try to be the hero. Always alert a lifeguard who will know exactly what to do.

Check out a few more rules here.
