Reporter Adrianne McKenzie tells us about myplace.

What is myplace?

Earlier in 2009, the new myplace project was launched in North London.

myplace is a new government scheme that provides brand new youth centres and services in England. The scheme has already created more than sixty new places to go to across the country.

Facilities in the new youth centres include:

  • Recording studios
  • Mountain bike tracks
  • Free wi-fi areas
  • Gyms and weights areas

Teenagers helped to design and develop the new centres, and had their say on what the money should be spent.

To find out more about the project and see what other people have been up to with myplace money, watch this video.

The film was produced by Paris Tume from the Salmon Youth Centre in Bermondsey. Paris also works with Mediabox, an organisation that gives grants to teenagers who want to make media projects for film, television, radio, web and print media.

The launch event

Judging by the huge turnout at the launch event, myplace is already a popular scheme. There were people from all walks of life including young people from youth clubs nationwide, various youth organisations such as The British Youth Council and the Minister for Children, Young People and Families.

Sophia Hussain, who is involved in myplace Bradford said, “When you leave school at 16 there’s not much to do. This (myplace) is the place where you can do things that school doesn’t really offer.”

myplace also aims to provide activities and classes that you may never have done in your spare time before. These could include:

  • Rock climbing
  • Cooking
  • Skate boarding
  • Media
  • Performing arts

There will also be counselling available for anyone who needs support as well as educational courses where young people can gain NVQ and AQA qualifications.

If there’s a myplace centre near you, why not pay a visit?
