Kick back with a book

Tuesday 14 August 2007
You’ve completed the game you bought at the start of the summer, watched all your DVDs, your best friend is on holiday, you’re bored and you have nothing to do. How about reading a book? If you don’t believe it can be fun don't take out word for it. n2k asked readers to kick back with three of the best and latest in youth books, and here’s what they thought…
Henry Tumour - Anthony McGowan
This is about a boy called Hector who gets a tumour. It sounds bad, but this tumour seems to be the best thing that’s happened to him because, believe it or not, it gives him advice on such thing as his fashion sense, hair styles and even tips about girls. It could make some people want a tumour, but you wouldn’t want one if you if it started to give more help than is wanted.
I’m not going to spoil it for you but it becomes a struggle for Hector to control his tumour and eventually it does some thing Hector personally regrets. I enjoyed the book, the funny antics that Hector and Henry got in to made me laugh not to mention the funny thoughts that Hector has going on inside his head. If you don’t believe me maybe that fact that it’s got a Book Trust teenage prize will seal the deal. Mega, 15
Twin Freaks – Paul Magrs
I’ve always wanted to audition for X Factor because I can sing quite well, so I really wanted to read this book. It’s about a girl called Helen and her sister
Eunice who keeps trying to get on all the TV talent shows, but they never make it. Helen is the one that can sing, but she doesn’t have the right looks. Eunice looks good but can’t sing at all. Their Mum is always pushing them and her and her boyfriend think up this plan that they should pretend to be Siamese twins to get them through. It’s quite funny and interesting although I don’t think I would go that far to get on TV.
It’s more about them as a family though and also the lies they tell. Really good. I’d read it again! Emily, 16
The Boy Book – E. Lockhart
This is really a girlie book, I’m not sure that boys will like it much. It’s based in an American high school and is about Ruby Oliver who is 16 and now driving. However she is really worried about starting her junior year at school because , all of her best friends from last year have dumped her, her ex-boyfriend is now going out with one of them, and her parents are making her see a shrink!
This author also wrote ‘The Boyfriend Book’ so if this is your thing you’ll probably like both books. It’s all about friends, boys, jobs, parents, enemies and crushes and loads of funny stories about dealing with all those things as a teenager. Brenda, 14
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
