More fun things to do this summer

Friday 13 July 2007
So, have you tried out all the things we suggested last week to keep your busy this summer? If so, we’ve got yet more fun stuff for you to do. If not, now you’ve got loads of ideas!
1. Go outside
Did you know that teenagers who sit around the house and do nothing but watch TV or play video games are at risk for childhood obesity for one and growing up to be a social misfit for another?
The summer’s here and it’s getting sunnier, so why not get out of the house? Organise a game of football down at the park, or learn how to play basketball. There are also plenty of summer schemes at local leisure centres to get involved with or summer holiday memberships for swimming pools.
Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire is also piloting ‘Do It Outside’ this summer, a three day scheme for under 16s to enjoy the adventurous, explorer-type outdoor lifestyle. You get to learn key survival skills which include stuff like abseiling, zip-lining, building a shelter, gutting fish and how to skin a rabbit – you never know when you’ll need those! Places are going fast, check out the website.
2. Get active
Why not plan a week away in France? PGL are organising camping holidays for 13-17 year olds at Club Mimosa on the Languedoc coast. It’s all about water sports including body boarding and windsurfing.
3. Make films
If you can get your hands on a video camera, spend the summer days making your own comedy, documentary, or soap. With sites like YouTube letting you upload your videos for free, you can make your very own series. You never know – you might create the next Friends or Ugly Betty and get snapped by Hollywood ! Remember that Media-Box and Channel 4 are looking to give away £500 to young people with good ideasfor short documentaries.
4. Redecorate
Give your bedroom a facelift! Search around jumble sales or charity shops for cool things to put in your new look room and have a painting party – all you need is a stereo, some paint and some nice friends.
5. Get cultural
Want to learn about art from the point of view of a teenager? For the next couple of months The Photographer’s Gallery in London are hosting ‘Teen Talks’ where teenagers can say what they think about an exhibition for 20 minutes in front of an audience! The talks take are at 3pm on Saturdays, find out more.
The word museum or gallery, might fill you with dread but if you really take a look at what’s on, you’ll find a lot to appeal to you.
Don’t forget the competition too! There are two family tickets to the scary Dungeons in London , York or Edinburgh up for grabs. Just send us an email.
Whatever you get up to this summer, n2k want to hear from you. Send us your podcast, video or story and we could publish it on the pages of n2k.
