Feeling nervous about your first day at a new school, college or uni? Take these steps to make the most out of it.

First day nerves

It’s completely normal to have first day nerves – especially when you’ve had all summer to think about that all important first day. If you’re anxious it’s probably because you’re imagining life outside of your comfort zone, without your usual crew and familiar faces around you.

Try not to stress though. It won’t be half as bad as you're imagining. Loads of other students will be in the exact same boat as you, so you won't be alone.

Introducing...

As nerve racking as it seems walking into your first class or lecture, you could use it as an opportunity to meet new people. If you get to choose your seat then pick a place where other students are nearby – you won't get anywhere cooped up in a corner.

This way you’ll be able to introduce yourself to other students as soon as possible. Kick your nerves aside because the longer you leave intros, the harder it'll become.

Me me me

Not all students will be new, some will have been there for years. These students will probably be really curious about you, so don't feel awkward if you get a few looks here and there. They'll want to know everything there is to know – where you’re from, what you like to do in your spare time and so on.

All the attention might be a bit intimidating at first but you’ll get the hang of it and soon all the fuss will be over. Just be yourself during all first encounters and let it flow from there.

You you you

Of course, don't just talk about yourself either. Take time to listen to your new mates.

Ask them a few questions as well. What’s the school and area like? Are there any cool places to jam? What other subjects are they taking? Anything to keep the conversation going smoothly.

Social circles

If you're starting a new school with a group of friends, try not to stick together 24/7. There’s nothing wrong if you do, but what's the harm in talking to new people? Who knows who you could meet?

Extracurricular activities

One of the best ways to meet new people, and get to know the school better, is by joining a few after-school activities or societies. This way you won’t be restricted to the classroom and you’ll get to spend time doing what you enjoy with people who have similar interests.

Try to sign up to activities at the beginning of the year so that you don’t miss out.

Bye bye, home

Moving out of home to go to college or uni can be quite challenging and something that takes a while to get used to. You won’t have anyone to help you with laundry, you’ll have to clean up after yourself and it could be solely up to you to keep your money matters in order. It's hard work being a student. Check out this student checklist for your uni must-haves.

If you plan to stay in halls then your flatmates will probably be the people who you’ll spend the most time with so make sure you get off to a good start. Say hello!
