Picture of some freshers

Thursday 28 September 2006

Recently on n2k, we asked anyone who was heading to uni for the first time whether they fancied blogging what it was like.

Here are a couple of contributions by some of those who've already made it.

Tania

Hi I'm Tania and I'm 18 and I am going to Newcastle to study psychology.

My mum and dad both wanted to take me in the car so we packed up my stuff (they said I couldn't take much because the rooms in my halls are quite small) and made our way there.

Last minute nerves

I didn't really say much during the journey because I felt really sick and as if I was going to start crying. My dad was just being himself but my mum was quiet and I could feel that she was upset too.

Saying goodbye

When we got there and unloaded my stuff into my room (they were right: it is small!) a final year student who was helping freshers settle in asked if I needed anything and I said I was OK but then started crying when mum and dad started to leave. What an idiot!

Mum was upset too and when they left I had a little moment to myself and then ventured out into the common room to see what was going on. I'm sharing a flat in the halls with six other girls.

Introductions

They all pretty much felt the same as I did so we were glad to have each other. We had a big chat about ourselves and then headed to the uni bar for more introductions. I've met so many people I can hardly remember their names but everyone seems lovely so far.

We've got a week of induction before lectures begin and I must say I'm quite nervous!

Michael

I got the train up to my university because I didn't want any long goodbyes at my new place, I thought starting afresh would be a good idea. It gave me time to think on the train and prepare myself.

Gettting to know you

I'll be studying teaching and I was glad to see that there were two other teaching trainees in my corridor of halls.

There are 14 of us, both boys and girls, and everyone is OK. A few of the girls shed some tears on the first night but most of us were busy getting to know each other.

Settling in

All I've done so far is attend presentations about the university and also about what my course will entail.

At first, it seems overwhelming but I know I'll get the hang of it. I thought it would be weird not living at home any more but I think I'm settling in quite well.
