Your options Q&A
My grades are better than expected. Can I apply to a different uni?
Congrats! If your results are better than your provisional grades then UCAS ‘Adjustment’ service lets you search around for other courses you may be interested in – and your firm offer will be reserved too. Don’t spend too long looking though, you'll only have a short time to find another place.
Can I reject my firm choice and go to my insurance?
Contact your insurance choice to see if they can still accept you – they may have already given your place to someone else. If they haven’t then ask them if they could accept you through clearing.
Remember, you can’t accept your insurance offer without being released from your firm offer first! Contact your firm choice to explain the situation. If you’re lucky they may be able to release you.
I didn't get the results I needed. What should I do?
Contact the university to see whether they’re still willing to take you. Some unis will let you off, especially if you just missed the mark.
You can also use the ‘Track’ service on the UCAS website to find out whether your place has been confirmed or not.
What’s clearing all about?
Clearing lets you apply for a place at a university if you didn’t get the grades you expected, applied for university late, or if you rejected all your other offers.
All course vacancies will be advertised on the UCAS website. You can contact as many different unis as you want but you’ll only be able to pick one!
The service is available until mid-September. Clearing can be quite stressful and time consuming so make sure you contact them as soon as possible. Look out for our article on clearing tomorrow.
Can I retake an exam if I want to?
If you’re interested in retaking an exam then talk to your teachers and tutors as soon as possible. They’ll be able to give you the best advice.
You’ll also have to contact the university that’s given you an offer to ask them what their policy is on retakes. Unfortunately, not all unis accept them. If they do then they might expect higher grades next time round. It’ll be up to you to decide whether it’s worth it or not.
Is there any way I can get my paper remarked?
If you think that your exam paper hasn't been marked correctly then talk to your teachers immediately. They’ll contact the awarding body to request your exam papers. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to contact the body yourself.
If, after seeing your paper, you still think that it wasn’t marked correctly then your college can make an appeal to the awarding body.
