Being a teenager isn't easy.

You've got school, college or work on your mind, your friends to deal with, maybe a romantic issue to sort out, probably not enough money to do what you want and perhaps even worries about the future.

While it's perfectly normal to worry, it's important that you don't bottle up your feelings and talk to somebody about what you're going through.

Dealing with stress

When you become stressed out about something, it can feel as if everything is getting on top of you. Whether you've got too much homework, you're not keen on your workmates or in the middle of a rough patch with your other half, you should make sure that it doesn't build up and affect other parts of your life.

Dealing with the problem head on is a good way of putting your mind at ease. For example, if schoolwork really is getting on top of you, head straight to a teacher before things get worse. You'll be amazed at how relieved you'll feel after admitting your problem

Talking to your parents

You might think the last people you'd want to go to with a problem would be your parents, but they might just surprise you. Don't dismiss them without giving them a chance.

Mates can be there for you

Sometimes only a mate's advice can help, especially if you're worried about talking to your parents. You need to make sure that you're opening up to a friend you can trust. Some friendships can be shallow and aren't suitable for sharing secrets or talking problems through. Make sure your choice of confidant is a true friend who won't blab all.

Help on the line

If you feel like you need to talk something over but aren't sure who to trust, maybe you should consider calling a helpline. There are many different helplines out there dedicated to just about very issue you could think of, and there are others which cover general issues.

It might seem strange talking about your personal life and baring your soul to someone you've never met, but helplines are usually staffed by people specially trained to help you.
