Easy exercising

Tuesday 20 June 2006
If you want to feel and look great, as well as eating healthily, doing a bit of exercise can also help you keep fit.
It's not all about pumping iron or going at it on a treadmill; there are ways of keeping fit that don't need lots of special machines or a costly gym membership
Walk this way
Instead of taking the bus for short distances, why not walk instead?
Walking for ten minutes uses up the same amount of energy as jogging for the same time, so you can keep fit without donning a tracksuit and sprinting all over the place
Life cycle
Getting out on your bike is another way of getting exercise. If you're not confident on the roads, head to a park with your mates and do a few circuits.
Make sure that cycling is permitted before you do, though. One form of exercise you don't need is the park-keeper chasing you off the grass.
Stair we go
It can be tempting when you're in places with lots of floors like department stores or shopping centres to take the lift and arrive where you want to be in seconds, but taking the stairs every now and again will set you well on your way to fitness.
Why not try and do a couple of trips up and down the stairs in your house to get even more step action?
Good sport
One of the most obvious ways you can stay fit and healthy is by getting involved in sport.
Whether you like being part of a team or doing things your own way, there are loads of sports to choose from.
You don't have to be an expert; all sports have different levels of fitness and ability so that you can build your aptitude gradually.
Water way to do it
Swimming is really good for you, and your local council should be able to tell you where you can find your nearest pool.
If you're not a strong swimmer, ask about swimming lessons. They can be quite reasonably priced and most pools do them for all ages and abilities.
Some pools even do discounts if you go regularly.
