A scheme called GirlsActive, backed by Dame Kelly Holmes aims to get teenage girls involved in sport. Watch the video and find out what it’s all about.
Girls and sport
Sport is an excellent way to improve self-confidence, health and well-being. However, research has shown that girls are less active in teen years than boys are, and that 40% of girls are likely to drop out of sports by the age of 18.
GirlsActive workshops
Kelly Holmes is the National School Sport Champion, a role given to her by the government and Youth Sports Trust. In an attempt to tackle the problem of teenage girls dropping out of sport Kelly embarked on the GirlsActive initiative.
It started out with workshops where girls and teachers could talk about the barriers to girls getting into sport, and how to get the more involved.
During the workshop issues such as the environment for PE lessons, the range of sports available and their PE kit were rated as either average or poor.
The girls at the workshop also suggested that alternative forms of physical activity, such as streetdance, boxercise and trampolining would really encourage girls to get into sport.
GilrlsActive
GirlsActive has put plans into action to attempt to get more girls interested.
Kelly Holmes ran workshops at schools in Hampshire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire, where teenage girls involved in the GirlsActive scheme have been working alongside their PE teachers. The aim was to get more girls into PE and also to help bring about positive change and encourage the school to take on more fun sports.
