5 easy ways to be green

Friday 7 December 2007
Global warming is scary stuff, after all its our environment and its up to us to look after it. Want to be greener but don't know how? n2k show you 5 easy ways to be a green teen.
The statistics
It may seem like a really tall order. Perhaps you feel that you are just one person and on there’s little that you can do on your own. However check this out:- if less than one in every hundred people that watched MTV switched to three energy efficient light bulbs, it would be equivalent to taking 100,000 cars off the road! Small energy efficient steps taken by many can clearly make a big difference to climate change.
Experts think that there are about 10 years before the effect of our CO2 emissions are irreversible. It may seem like a lot, before you know it, the 3650 days will be up. The time to act is now.

5 ways...
1) Electric eco
Think of how much electricity you could be saving when you turn off your computer, even just putting it on standby or sleep can make a difference.
If you tend to leave your mobile phone charger plugged in and the DVD player, TV, CD, computer and everything else on standby, why not make an even bigger difference and get into the habit of switching off at the wall at the end of the day?
2) Stylin' it in vintage
Vintage style is in fashion now, and it won't cost you a fortune to be in style. Dig around the local charity shops, car boot sales and even in your parents' wardrobes for bags, belts and shoes from the times gone by.
Fashion is a fickle business so try not to throw out clothes that still have life left in them – you’d be amazed how many times you end up rocking a style that that seem totally unacceptable a few years ago.
3) Bus, bike or walk
Help reduce carbon emissions by taking the bus to school or college. You could also work those muscles and get a bike. Alternatively, you can never beat walking - its great exercise and you'll never be stuck in traffic!
4) Filter it
Instead of buying bottled water, think about buying a filter for tap water instead. You'll save loads of money and reduce plastic container waste too.
5) Go veggie once a week
What you eat affects the world more than you think it does. The meat industry wears out the environment from huge energy inputs and creates toxic waste problems. Think about changing to organic food, no industrial chemicals are used and the ingredients are kinder to your health.
