The Children's Plan

Tuesday 11 December 2007

This week the Government is launching a ten-year plan called The Children’s Plan which tackles issues that directly affect you as a young person in the UK today. All week we will be looking at some of the ideas laid out in the plan and also providing links and helpful tips that could be useful for you.

Who came up with the plan?

In June the Government set up the Department for Children, Schools and Families to make sure that all young people can reach their potential. One of the department’s tasks has been to develop this Children’s Plan.

How was the plan made?

The Government asked children, young people, parents, and those who work with children up and down the country, about their worries and hopes for young people. The plan reflects what they told the Government.

Why do we need a plan?

The Government thinks that all young people in the UK are able to succeed! They also feel that schools, families, communities all have a part to play in helping young people to achieve their best.

The simple idea behind the plan is to give all children and young people the best chance possible for a happy childhood and also provide them with as many opportunities as possible whilst they are growing up.

What’s the plan about?

The Government spoke to young people around the country and came up with a plan that reflected their lives – the issues affecting them, the changes they’d like to see and ideas they had.

Through the Children’s Plan the Government wants to make sure those children and young people achieve their potential and have a happy, healthy and safe childhood. The idea is to improve the quality of life for young people by working directly with them and also with families, communities and also carers.

What are some of the issues?

The Children’s Plan is looking at -

  • Health and Wellbeing – how to keep you eating healthily and also ways to enjoy yourself.
  • Protecting the vulnerable – making sure that young people are safe and also have someone to talk to about problems such as bullying
  • Education and Training –aiming to give you as much choice as possible in the way you learn and get an education and therefore creating the best chance possible to get good jobs after education.
  • Keeping you on the path to success - one you have your education The Children’s Plan also aims to look at ways of creating more opportunities, and also keep you out of trouble, or if things do go wrong, help you get back on track.
